چکیده

The composition and photochemical transformations of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the northern North Pacific Ocean were investigated at the molecular level using ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry and geochemical tracers. Analyses included vertical profiles and experiments in which deep sea DOM was exposed to sunlight and incubated in the dark. The composition of the deep sea DOM was found to be approximately uniform and enriched with highly unsaturated compounds, with highly aromatic compounds, and with polycyclic aromatics. Surface DOM had a significantly different composition, being enriched with both highly unsaturated and with unsaturated aliphatic compounds potentially due to the addition of photodegradation products and phytoplankton inputs. Deep sea DOM composition is transformed by photoreactions, becoming more similar to surface DOM. The influence of photochemistry extends beyond the photic zone, presumably because of vertical export of DOM previously modified at the surface.

Transport and diagenesis of dissolved and particulate terrigenous organic matter in the North Pacific Ocean

Lignin measurements were made on suspended particulate organic matter (POM), total dissolved organic matter (DOM), high-molecular-weight (HMW) DOM, and low-molecular-weight (LMW) DOM in the North Pacific at Station Aloha. Carbon-normalized yields of lignin and dC measurements indicate that while terrigenous organic matter accounts only for B1% of DOM in seawater, submicron POM has a substantial...

Organic matter transformations in the upper mesopelagic zone of the North Pacific: Chemical composition and linkages to microbial community structure

[1] Transformation processes in the euphotic and mesopelagic zones are of crucial importance to the biological pump and global elemental cycles. In this study, elemental stoichiometries and chemical compositions of particulate and dissolved organic matter (DOM) were investigated in the euphotic and upper mesopelagic zones of the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. The distributions of bacterial bio...

Terrigenous dissolved organic matter in the Arctic Ocean and its transport to surface and deep waters of the North Atlantic

[1] Surface waters of the Arctic Ocean have the highest concentrations of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and terrigenous dissolved organic matter (DOM) of all ocean basins. Concentrations of dissolved lignin phenols in polar surface waters are 7-fold to 16-fold higher than those in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, and stable carbon isotopic compositions of DOM are depleted in C by 1–2% relative...

Conservation of dissolved organic matter molecular composition during mixing of the deep water masses of the northeast Atlantic Ocean

Characterizing the composition of marine dissolved organic matter (DOM) is important for gaining insight into its role in oceanic biogeochemical cycles. Using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry, we analyzed the molecular composition of solid phase extracted (SPE) DOM from the northeast Atlantic to investigate the specificity of the DOM pool of the individual major water...

Composition and Transformation of Dissolved Organic Matter in the Baltic Sea

The processing of terrestrial dissolved organic matter (DOM) in coastal shelf seas is an important part of the global carbon cycle, yet, it is still not well understood. One of the largest brackish shelf seas, the Baltic Sea in northern Europe, is characterized by high freshwater input from sub-arctic rivers and limited water exchange with the Atlantic Ocean via the North Sea. We studied the mo...
